Mysticeti, the Great Whales - An Endangered Species

We do not know where this photograph comes form originally, but it looks like it might be something from the National Geographic, based on a similarity of photographs. Great photo!

Mysticeti is an endangered species and can be viewed as an excellent symbol for environmental protection. This blog will be devoted to environmental matters.

Mysticeti, Balaenoptera musculus, the great whales, also called baleen whales or whalebone whales, are a suborder of Cetacea, a group formed by the whales, dolphins and porpoises.

The largest known animal species, the Blue Whale, pictured at the top of this blog, is a member of the Mysticeti, a taxonomic name whose origin is said to derive from Aristotle's Historia Animalium (History of Animals).

The largest Blue Whale is regarded to be larger than any known dinosaur that ever lived. The largest Blue Whale known in our time was an Antarctic Blue Whale recorded by the American Cetacean Society at 108 feet (ca. 33 meters), which must have weighed as much as 172 metric tons (190 short tons). (1 metric ton or tonne (French) = 1000 kilograms or ca. 2205 pounds. 1 short ton = 2000 lbs or ca. 907 kg), so that the largest Blue Whales would have reached a weight of ca. 380,000 pounds or ca. 172,000 kilograms.
